Grr argh monster: tutorial

DSCF1167
I made these little grr argh monsters for Ravelry Nerd Wars T2. They were very simple and I thought I’d post how I made them so my team mates could make some too. I’ve never written a knitting pattern before, but here goes.

Grr Argh! Monster

Materials needed:
~ Worsted weight yarn (mine was some 100% cheapy wool I had)
~ US 4 DPN’s
~a pinch of stuffing
~a small bit of black felt
~white and black embroidery floss
~ Small black beads for eyes (or use floss)
Directions:
Head & Body

Row 1: cast on 6 sts (two on each of 3 dpn’s), join to knit 1 row around
Row 2: Kfb around (12 sts)
Row 3: Knit
Row 4: Kfb around (24 sts)
Row 5-8: Knit even
Row 9: K2 – K2tog around (18 sts)
Row 10: Knit
Row 11: K2tog around (9 sts)
Stuff some stuffing in the head at this point (you’ll probably add a little more in a few rows as well)
Row 12: knit around
Row 13: k1, k2tog around (6 sts)
Add more stuffing if needed
Row 14: K1, kfb around (9 sts)
Row 15: knit around
Row 16: kfb around (18 sts)
Row 17-26: Knit around (about 1 1/2 inches or so)
Row 27: for each needle: k2, k2tog, k2
Row 28 – 32: knit
Row 33: k1 p1 to last 2 sts, p2tog (this is so the k1p1 rib will work out even)
Row 34-36: continue k1p1 rib pattern
bind off loosely in pattern
Abbreviations:
sts – stitches
dpn – double point needles
Kfb – increase by knitting into the front and back of a single stitch.
K – knit
P – purl
K2tog – decrease by knitting two stitches together.

Add arms with i-cord:
pick up 3 sts at top-ish part of the body and knit i-cord for about 1 1/2 inches. Cut yarn leaving a decent sized tail. Thread end back through 3 sts and pull tight. With the 3 sts still on the needles thread yarn through again but do not pull tight. remove needle and tie in a knot. You will have 1 loop and 1 string here, trim to make 3 “fingers”. Here are a few pictures. Its hard to explain:

Repeat for second arm. Weave in all ends.
Embroider face:
with black felt cut out a little oval shape to fit on lower face, and stitch it on with black floss.

With white floss add the teeth. Make them jagged and uneven.DSCF1177
With the black floss add on the ears, making a semi circle and a dot in the middle. Sew on the eyes and secure all the ends.

Put on your finger and say: “GRRRRR ARGHHHHH!”

Make lots of them and share:

The first 11 rows of this pattern comes from this finger puppet tutorial. The rest is made up by me, to the best of my knowledge. Also, I am in no way affiliated with Mutant Enemy Productions (I am just a huge fan of all things Joss). Please use this pattern however you wish, just please link back to me if you do.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions. I’ve never written a pattern before.
